The social media gap is tightening

Social media platforms have like it or not taken over our life. Well taken over seems a tad drastic, they have at least become an extra limb to our existence. Social media has done wonders in keeping people connected and continues to revolutionize the way the world stays informed. Out of all the social media platforms out there a few stand as the juggernauts:,   ,  and come to mine (I have all on my phone) Each one of the platforms were designed to do specific things. However I have recently noticed that they are all meshing into one, and what you should be doing on one youre doing on another. Facebook is the worst culprit, Facebooks main function is to have an online profile where u can share what you’re doing via pictures status updates etc. and keeping connected with others. Yet instagram is designed for users to share their own pictures or photography? Doesn’t facebook do the exact same thing? Let’s also not get into why facebook bought instagram for 1 billion dollars. Tumblr is essentially a blog where people feel they can express their individuality artistically via content they find on the internet. Yes tumblr can open your net surfing experience to many Easter eggs about things you too enjoy, but once again can’t Facebook do the same thing? You share things you find online with your friends. Tumblr also had a boom with photographers sharing their work; doesn’t instagram do that? And finally the most irrelevant yet most world influencing: Twitter. Twitter is pretty odd when you think about it: You share status updates: Facebook, share current pictures, all previously mentioned platforms. The only thing that twitter has going for it is the huge celebrity following and the fact that somehow twitter has managed to become a viable news source for everyday events. Though I’m being a hypocrite ranting as I previously said, use all these platforms. Why is our society so obsessed with joining so many different forms of social media when they all almost do the same thing. They are all linked now with a click of one button. Has our society really come to a point where we are so obsessed with exploiting every aspect of our individualism?
